Social Distancing 101

How do we navigate social distancing? Since most of us have never experienced this before, we are figuring it out as we go. I think it's fair to say that we are all feeling unsettled by what is going on around us, especially those who already deal with some level of anxiety. So, what can we do?
  • Monitor your social media use. Honestly, those of us working from home or not working right now are going to be on social media more than usual, and that's understandable. Do pay attention to how much time you spend scrolling but more important, what you are taking in. If you want the latest information, I recommend checking out the CDC http://www.cdc.gov, WHO http://www.who.int and local government. If you find yourself getting anxious about other videos and articles, unfollow for now.
  • Pay attention to your self-talk. This is always important but now more than ever. Practice speaking to yourself the way you would speak to a friend...with lots of patience and grace.
  • Find small things to be grateful for. Most of us live such hurried lives that we once craved having nothing to do. If you have some extra time now, make the most of it. Read, catch up on Netflix, go for a walk, take naps...without guilt!
  • Stay in contact with friends and family. Texting is great but a phone call or FaceTime is even better and will help you feel more connected. Just because we can't be with our loved ones right now, doesn't mean we have to be lonely. Try Zoom for a group chat! You'll be surprised how much it can feel like the real thing (and you can stay home in your sweats!)
If anxiety is keeping you from living the life you want, a licensed professional can help. Contact me and we can set up a time to talk. I offer Telehealth appointments, allowing us to meet through secure video to achieve your goals.
